Adjustable Necklaces
An adjustable necklace solves the problem every chain has: the length that is right with a crew neck is wrong with a V-neck. The necklace chains in this collection are handmade in our Texas studio in 14k gold filled or 925 sterling silver and adjust in one of two ways: a slider bead that locks anywhere from choker length to 22 inches, or an extender chain that gives a station or charm necklace a two-inch range. Wear one alone, or set three at different lengths and layer them.
Adjustable Necklace Lengths: Where Each Setting Sits
The slider chains here lock at any length up to 22 inches, so one gold chain necklace covers every spot on this scale. Set it, then layer.

Sits at the base of the neck. Best with off-shoulder and scoop necklines, or as the top layer of a stack.

Collarbone
The everyday setting, and the length a simple gold necklace is usually cut to. Works with crew necks and buttoned shirts.

Two Ways a Necklace Chain Adjusts Here
Most pieces in this collection use a slider bead: a small ball on the chain with a silicone grip inside that holds wherever you set it. Hold the bead, pull the chain ends to shorten or lengthen, and let go. The cable, box and bead chains work this way, and they are the ones to choose if you want a gold chain necklace that goes from choker to 22 inches. The rest adjust with an extender, a short length of chain behind the clasp that takes a 16-inch necklace up to 18. A Layered Chain Necklace Look in Three Steps
Layering is where an adjustable necklace earns its place: you set the gaps yourself instead of buying layering chains in three fixed lengths.

Pick a base
A slider cable or box chain in 14k gold filled, set at 16 inches. If you would rather never adjust it, a fixed paperclip chain or lace chain makes a good base too.

Add the focal point
A pendant necklace, an initial necklace or a tiny cross two inches below the base, so the pendant has clear space around it.

Finish with length
A second slider chain set long, at 20 to 22 inches, or a beaded satellite chain for texture. Keep every layer the same 14k color; our gold filled necklaces all match.

There is no clasp to re-fasten and nothing to lose, so you can change the length in a few seconds with the necklace on.

Yes, the 14k gold filled chains are water-friendly and sweat-proof, so showers, workouts and hand washing are fine. Rinse in fresh water after the pool or the sea and pat dry, including the slider bead. Sterling silver chains can go in water too but tarnish faster with chlorine, so take those off to swim.
Small pendants sit best at 16 to 18 inches, just at or below the collarbone; larger pendants and chunkier charms look right at 18 to 20. With an adjustable necklace you do not have to decide in advance, which is why the slider chains are the ones we suggest for a pendant you have not bought yet.
