What Is Demi Fine Jewelry? (Also Called Semi Fine Jewelry)
Demi fine jewelry, also sold as semi fine jewelry (demi and semi both mean half), is jewelry made with real precious metal that is not solid precious metal all the way through. Three materials qualify, and this collection uses all three: 14k gold filled, where a thick layer of 14k gold is bonded under heat and pressure to a jeweler's brass core; gold vermeil, where gold is plated over sterling silver; and sterling silver on its own. Fashion jewelry is base metal with a flash of plating. Fine jewelry is solid gold or platinum. Demi fine sits between the two in materials, and in price.
The practical difference is how it wears. The gold on a gold filled piece is 5% of its weight, many times thicker than plating, so our demi fine jewelry is waterproof, tarnish-resistant and hypoallergenic, and it carries the same warranty as our solid 14k gold. It is the jewelry you keep on, not the jewelry you keep in a box.
Demi Fine Jewelry vs Fine Jewelry vs Fashion Jewelry
Where this collection sits, in plain terms.
| Fashion jewelry | Demi fine jewelry (this collection) | Fine jewelry (our solid gold) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Metal | Brass or alloy with a thin plating | 14k gold filled, gold vermeil or 925 sterling silver | Solid 14k gold |
| Gold in it | A fraction of a micron | Gold filled: 5% of the weight in 14k gold. Vermeil: at least 2.5 microns over sterling | 58.3% gold, all the way through |
| Water and sweat | Keep it dry | Showers, workouts and hand washing are fine | Fine |
| Tarnish | Fades and flakes within months | Gold filled resists it; sterling wants an occasional polish | Does not tarnish |
| Sensitive skin | Often contains nickel | Nickel-free and hypoallergenic | Nickel-free |
| Lifespan | A season | Years of daily wear | Generations; can be repolished and resized |
| Price | Lowest | Middle, without the 10x markup | Highest |
Everything on this page is demi fine. For the solid gold column, see our 14k gold diamond necklaces and the rest of the solid range.
The Look of Fine Gold Jewelry, Without the 10x Markup
Most fine jewelry brands price a piece at a large multiple of the metal and work in it, which is how a simple solid gold chain ends up costing many times what went into it. Le Serey was built to skip that. Every piece here is made to order in small batches in our Texas studio by a small, female-owned team, so there is no warehouse of stock to carry and no markup to cover it. The gold is mineral-traced and conflict free, the sterling is 100% recycled, and the shapes are the same simple, timeless ones you would find at the fine jewelry brands: paperclip and rope chains, everyday hoops, bezel studs, thin stacking bands. The difference is that you can wear them every day without thinking about it. Read more about how we work, or see what has just left the bench in new arrivals.
Demi Fine Jewelry for Every Day: Start With One of Each
The collection is designed for layering and stacking, so the easiest way in is one piece from each group, all in the same 14k color.
A chain
A paperclip, rope or satellite chain is the base layer; our layering chains are cut to sit at different lengths. Add a pendant necklace on the shorter one and the two read as a set. Adjustable length chains take the guesswork out of where it falls.
An earring, or three
Everyday hoops in two sizes down the lobe, huggies for second piercings, threaders or an ear jacket when you want movement. Every post is nickel-free.
A ring, then a stack
Thin bands in gold filled or sterling, worn one at a time or three to a finger. Our stacking rings page and ring stacking guide show the combinations that sit flat.
A bracelet
A chain or cuff from our gold and sterling bracelets in the same color as your necklace, so wrist and neck match. Fiddly clasp? Our magnetic clasps and extenders fix that.
Frequently asked questions
Demi fine jewelry is jewelry made with real precious metal that is not solid precious metal throughout: 14k gold filled, gold vermeil and sterling silver are the usual three. It costs a fraction of fine jewelry because the gold is a thick surface layer rather than the whole piece, and it outlasts fashion jewelry because that layer is far thicker than costume plating. Everything in this collection is demi fine, handmade in Texas.
Yes. Semi fine jewelry and demi fine jewelry describe the same tier, the one between fashion and fine; demi is simply the French word for half. A few retailers use semi fine for lighter plated pieces, so check the material rather than the label. At Le Serey the label always means 14k gold filled, gold vermeil or 925 sterling silver.
Yes, the gold is real; it just does not go all the way through. A 14k gold filled piece carries a layer of real 14k gold, the same alloy used in fine gold jewelry, that makes up 5% of its weight. Gold vermeil is real gold plated thickly over sterling silver. What you are not paying for is a solid gold core you would never see, which is where the fine jewelry price goes.
Gold filled, yes: it is waterproof and sweat-proof and can stay on through showers, workouts and hand washing. Sterling silver is fine in water but tarnishes faster with chlorine, and gold vermeil lasts longest if it comes off for the pool. After salt water or chlorine, rinse any piece in fresh water and pat it dry.
Gold filled pieces last years of daily wear, often decades, because the gold layer is bonded rather than dipped and does not flake. Sterling lasts indefinitely with an occasional polish. Gold vermeil is the lightest of the three and lasts several years with care. Every piece carries our warranty, and our gold filled jewelry is the range we recommend for pieces you never take off.
Buy fine jewelry, meaning solid gold, for pieces you want to wear for decades, resize or hand down, and for anything with a real diamond. Buy demi fine jewelry for what you wear daily and want to layer, stack and change with the season, and for pieces that will see sunscreen, sweat and travel. Many customers do both: a solid gold chain as the anchor, demi fine pieces around it. We make both, so the color matches.
Gold filled for anything that takes friction, such as rings, bracelets and daily chains, because its gold layer is many times thicker than vermeil. Gold vermeil suits earrings and pendants that are not rubbed against things, and has a sterling silver core if you prefer solid precious metal underneath. Both are nickel-free. Most pieces here are gold filled or sterling, with a few in vermeil; the material is listed on every product page.
